Bird-watching and Nature Lore

Come spend the day or camp overnight at Liz’s Grove, a new site for birders and nature lovers near Dudleyville, AZ.  Liz's Grove connects such major birding areas as The Boyce-Thompson Arboretum, Pinal Peak, San Pedro River riparian area, and the Arivaipa Wilderness; and is considered the heart of the most pristine section of the San Pedro north of  I-10.

Note: the land is private but in a conservation easement with Bureau of Land Management. It adjoins The Nature Conservancy's ponds and sanctuary for the Willow Flycatcher.  (We have a great viewing area!)

Special birds? See list -- it's growing. This is the best place in Arizona to see the Mississippi Kite.  It’s also great for Zone-tailed  and Gray hawks.

AND we have a flourishing colony of leopard frogs in our cool, clear San Pedro River!

Liz's Grove is a privileged access --No Fees, but a donation is requested.. (call Bill Taylor at 520-795-3832  for reservations,  full visitor information and directions on how to find Liz's Grove and check under "Links" for organizations and guides offering tours..

There is an RV park down the road 5 miles at the Arivaipa turnoff if you want to bring your RV.

Elizabeth Van Horn Taylor -

Liz was a small, quiet person with broad interests in life.  She graduated from Middlebury College and the School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT, with a Master's in English as a Foreign Language. Subsequently Liz led group living experiences in Japan, trained Peace Corps volunteers, worked at Harvard, and collected crystals in India and Afghanistan; and she traveled in such far off places at East Germany, Peru, Egypt and across China on the Silk Road (her second extended visit in China.)

But her biggest concern was environmental issues--from seeing so much of the world?  She became a member/investor in the local Saguaro-Juniper Corporation; and subsequently a volunteer with the Southeast Arizona Bird Observatory (SABO) and a team member in recording and banding the hummingbirds of the lower San Pedro River with her husband Bill.

Liz's health and the search for new study sites brought her here to the Double Check Ranch in 2003.  Her cancer demanded the highest standards of nutrition and while visiting with the Schwennesens she with Bill concurrently learned of the rich bird life of the area--leading the Taylor's to suggest the project which today has become "Liz's Grove."

To a lovely lady, we dedicate this spot.  "Liz's Grove."
